International students banned from bringing dependants to the UK

If you are a full-time student enrolled in a postgraduate course that lasts for nine months or longer, the current student visa allows bringing dependants to the UK.

Under new rules established by home secretary Suella Braverman, and starting from January 2024, applicants enrolled in research programs such as PhD. students only will be allowed to bring their dependants to the UK.

The UK government is making a concerted effort to curb overall immigration, as about 136,000 dependent student visas were issued in 2018, which is an increase from 16,000 in 2019.

As a result of a rising trend of newly arrived students dropping out of the university to work in the care sector, international students will no longer be able to switch from a study visa to a work visa before completing their course.

There will also be a review of the maintenance requirements (also known as bank statement) for students and dependents.

How can I bring my dependants to the UK?

There have been no changes to the graduate route (post-study visa) which currently allows international students to remain in the UK and find employment after graduation. This is to say that once you get a job with a licensed sponsor, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa and then bring your dependants to the UK.

The following countries are still allowing students to bring their dependants
